The Ravan Mukha is a vibrant traditional mask created by skilled artisans of Samaguri Satra in Majuli, Assam. These masks are an important part of Mukha Bhaona, a classical form of Assamese theatre introduced by the Vaishnavite saint Srimanta Sankardeva.
The mask depicts Ravana, the ten-headed demon king from the Ramayana, symbolizing power, pride, and intelligence. In many performances, the mask highlights Ravana’s dramatic and commanding personality.
Key features of the mask include:
- Expressive facial details: Large painted eyes, bold eyebrows, and a thick curled moustache highlight Ravana’s powerful and commanding personality.
- Bright traditional colours: Red, yellow, green, and black tones create a striking visual effect suitable for stage performances and storytelling.
- Decorative crown: A tall and colorful crown symbolizes Ravana’s royal status as the ruler of Lanka.
- Materials used: Traditionally crafted using bamboo (jaatibaah), potter’s clay, cow dung, cotton cloth, and natural pigments, all locally available materials that make the mask lightweight yet durable.
- Traditional technique: Artisans first create a 3D bamboo skeleton, which is then covered with clay-coated cotton cloth. Layers of a clay and cow-dung mixture are applied to shape and refine the mask’s facial features. After drying, the mask is carefully painted with natural pigments to achieve its vivid and expressive appearance.
