The Veer Jatayu Mukha is a handcrafted theatrical mask made by skilled artisans of Majuli, especially those associated with Samaguri Satra. These masks are an important part of Mukha Bhaona, a devotional theatre form introduced by the Vaishnavite saint Srimanta Sankardeva to present stories from Hindu epics and sacred texts through dramatic performances.
The mask represents Jatayu, the heroic vulture who courageously fought against Ravana in an attempt to rescue Sita in the Ramayana. Jatayu is remembered as a symbol of loyalty, bravery, and self-sacrifice, making him an inspiring character in mythological storytelling. The mask usually features bird-like characteristics such as a curved beak, expressive eyes, and stylized feather patterns, reflecting the powerful presence of the legendary bird.

- Decorative crown: A stylized crown enhances the character’s dramatic presence during theatrical performances.
- Vibrant traditional colours: Bright tones such as yellow, orange, red, and white create a striking visual effect on stage.
